Some of you might know that recently I lost a soul sister in Romania, Adela Dinu. She lived a life filled with profound love for humanity, absolute service and joy for the simple things. The world will never be the same without her. The seeds of goodness, kindness and generosity she planted within our hearts are sprouting stronger than ever before. Because she loved all of us fully and unconditionally, we love back everything she left within us. We grow in our love and light learning from all before us, who left an unparalleled legacy of beauty in how they touched this Earth and all our lives. I hired Adela in 2000, nine months before I immigrated to the US, as the Executive Director of the Association for the Promotion of Women Romania (APoWeR). I founded and led this organization from 1997 through 2001. Our mission was to empower survivors of domestic violence through legal, emotional and economic empowerment services, and to draft legislation against domestic abuse that protects the survivors and their children. Adela was only 22 years old when I hired her, a recent graduate with a psychology degree. She charmed all of us right away with her kindhearted personality, her gifts and her integrity. In 2001, my life took an unexpected turn when I gave birth in Romania to our son, Arthur. He suffered a stroke and became gravely ill at only two days after birth. We left Romania quite in a hurry to save Arthur’s life. United States had the best medical care and we needed experienced neurologists and sustained therapy. I had no time to prepare my team for this departure. Adela promised me that she would take care of APoWeR like a mother would for her child. She not only kept her promise, but she has worked miracles for our country, while also becoming a loving mother and a wife, a university professor, a sister and a role model for all who encountered her. APoWeR had only four staff members when I left, and an immense task ahead. We had just finished drafting the first domestic violence bill in Romania, and the battle was to bring the bill into the Parliament and to advocate for it to become a law. Adela was the leading force behind this effort. She along with three other champions, Sile Moldovan and Florin and Gabriela Kovacs, took ownership of this project and all the services offered to survivors of domestic abuse and led them to fruition. The domestic violence bill was passed into a law in 2003. Adela was never afraid of challenges and no task was too difficult for her to approach. She loved solving complex problems and helping people become the better versions of themselves. She dedicated herself fully and unconditionally to making life better for all. She was an angel sent to empower, transform and comfort many souls. She entered into eternity too early, at only 38 years old, leaving behind a beautiful 6 year-old daughter and a devastated family, community and friends. Adela will live forever in my soul and my heart until we meet again in the land beyond the horizon. She shines upon all of us from where she is, reminding each of us to live fully, love everything and pursue our deepest calling and gifts. I love you sweet sister and will always do. Rest in light and peace! For Grief
by John O'Donohue When you lose someone you love, Your life becomes strange, The ground beneath you becomes fragile, Your thoughts make your eyes unsure; And some dead echo drags your voice down Where words have no confidence Your heart has grown heavy with loss; And though this loss has wounded others too, No one knows what has been taken from you When the silence of absence deepens. Flickers of guilt kindle regret For all that was left unsaid or undone. There are days when you wake up happy; Again inside the fullness of life, Until the moment breaks And you are thrown back Onto the black tide of loss. Days when you have your heart back, You are able to function well Until in the middle of work or encounter, Suddenly with no warning, You are ambushed by grief. It becomes hard to trust yourself. All you can depend on now is that Sorrow will remain faithful to itself. More than you, it knows its way And will find the right time To pull and pull the rope of grief Until that coiled hill of tears Has reduced to its last drop. Gradually, you will learn acquaintance With the invisible form of your departed; And when the work of grief is done, The wound of loss will heal And you will have learned To wean your eyes From that gap in the air And be able to enter the hearth In your soul where your loved one Has awaited your return All the time.
